RC Buggies for People Who Love To Race

6th Oct 2014

Whether you are interested in competitive racing or simple backyard play, buying your first hobby-grade RC buggy may be a bit intimidating for a newbie. Toy-grade RC units are less expensive, but they are slow and less capable, break easily, and cannot be repaired if they break.  So if you want to be a serious hobbyist then go shopping for a hobby-class product, as these are much faster and more fun, and you can repair them if they break. One of the more popular vehicle styles is the RC Buggy, as it can be driven both on-road and off-road. Here are some things to consider when searching for a good RC buggy:

  • Car scale – The most popular hobby-grade vehicle scale is 1/10th scale. Larger scale Buggies (1/5 or 1/8 scale) provide more ground clearance, and therefore work better off-road, and may be faster. Smaller RC Buggies (1/16th or 1/18th) work fine on smoother surfaces, but may not work that well on rougher terrain or on grass. Scales nowadays range from 1/5th (really large RC buggies) to 1/24th.
  • Car features – There are a number of things you need to consider when selecting a RC buggy:
    - Is it ready to run? This means thing like is it fully assembled, does it come with all the radio gear, battery and charger (if electric) -- what else do you need to start racing? - Is it 4 wheel drive or 2 wheel drive --- 4 wheel drive is typically better - If it is electric – is the motor brushed or brushless? Brushless is faster and more efficient, but also more expensive than brushed motor vehicles - does it have a AM radio system, or a 2.4G radio system -- 2.4G radio systems are better - If nitro –what is the size of the engine – does it have single or 2 speed transmission?
  • Electric versus Nitro - Nitro vehicles offer the realism of smoke and noise, and can keep running as long as you want as long as you have fuel. Electric vehicles are easier to operate and maintain, are quiet, have reverse, and can be used indoors, -- however you will need several batteries if you want more play time.
  • Vendor– You want to make sure your vendor maintains a full inventory of parts for the vehicle you purchase, so that you can quickly get parts when you need them. You also want to make sure the vendor will provide you with the support you need, should you run into any problems.
